Mary Finn School Update week ending Sept 26, 2025

Main entrance

Dear Finn Families

It was another great week here at the Finn School.

In Preschool and Kindergarten, students are continuing the important work of building upon the foundations of learning. They are practicing letters and sounds, writing the letters in their names and other words.

In Grade 1, students are diving into inspiring stories such as - Waiting for the Biblioburro and Tomás and the Library Lady. These texts not only strengthen reading, writing, and vocabulary but also encourage empathy, curiosity, and critical thinking.

In Spanish class, Kindergarten and Grade 1 students are having fun learning foundational vocabulary and conversational skills that connect directly to their daily lives. They are practicing how to say the day, month, and year, as well as learning to count in Spanish with increasing accuracy and confidence. Students are also exploring how to talk about the weather and choosing clothing that is appropriate for different weather conditions, making the learning both practical and engaging.

Beyond academics, our classroom communities are becoming more cohesive each day. Students are forming friendships and learning how to support one another

We encourage you to check out the photos below and please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything.

Enjoy the weekend!

Lunch Volunteering

Dear Finn Lunch Volunteers,

Thank you for volunteering in our Finn School Cafeteria! Having extra lunch helpers makes our lunch periods run more smoothly.

In addition to the training you have already received about being a lunch helper (see video link here for a refresher: Lunch Volunteer Video, we need to emphasize some guidelines to keep our students safe at lunch.

  • Volunteers may not serve seconds (extra food) to any students. THE ONLY EXTRA FOOD ALLOWED TO BE SERVED AS AN “EXTRA” ARE FRUITS or VEGETABLES (if extra are available).

  • If students would like a second lunch or additional milk, they will need to purchase one with their parents/guardians previously requested permission.

  • Students should not need to visit the nurse during lunch, unless there is concern for allergic reaction, or other emergent situation. Headaches, vague belly aches, and other ailments can wait. If you are unsure, please ask a staff member.

  • Only staff members should dismiss students to the bathroom. If a student asks for your permission, please have them ask a staff member first. All students have had an opportunity to use the bathroom before lunch.

  • All Students are encouraged to clean up after themselves. We encourage all Finn students to report spills and adults should assist with cleaning as needed. Most students cannot clean a mess on their own, but should be encouraged to help. If they get their hands dirty (wiping the floor), you should have them go wash their hands and return to the cafeteria.

  • MILK and wet DAIRY spills should be wiped immediately by an adult. We have some students with dairy allergy with skin contact.

  • While it is exciting for both parent and child to connect at lunchtime, it is crucial that lunch volunteers assist ALL students in the lunchroom. Please make every effort to support all students.

Thank you for your attention to help make lunch at Finn successful and safe for all of our students. And please reach out to me if you have any questions.

With appreciation,

Clayton
