Earlier this week, Northborough–Southborough Public Schools and the Mary E. Finn School were honored with an Employer Recognition Award from New England Donor Services, nominated by former Finn Preschool staff member Christina Aguirre.
Christina, who received a life-saving organ transplant, shared that the encouragement and care she experienced from colleagues, the Finn community, and the district made a meaningful difference during her illness and recovery. In her nomination, Christina expressed heartfelt gratitude to Superintendent Martineau, HR Director Heather Richards, Preschool Administrator Jennifer Henry, and the entire Finn staff for the compassion and support shown throughout her transplant journey. This recognition celebrates Christina’s strength and resilience while also reflecting the empathy and community spirit that define our schools.
Also, this week students from the Algonquin Writing Center, a student-led academic support program founded in 2016 and led by English teacher and Southborough resident Sara Stein, visited Finn for a half-day to work with our Grade 1 students. During their visit, the high school tutors helped our young writers brainstorm ideas, develop characters, and explore creative storytelling through fun prompts—one favorite being, “Would you rather sneeze confetti or burp bubbles?”
Our first graders were fully engaged and eager to share their imaginative responses. The visit was a wonderful example of mentorship and connection across grade levels, as the tutors also reflected on their own elementary school writing experiences—several having attended Finn themselves—and reminded our students that they will be high school writers before they know it.
And finally, we are excited to share that Sria Joshi from Mrs. Ormberg’s Kindergarten class was recognized in the Massachusetts School Library Association (MSLA) Annual Bookmark Contest, earning Honorable Mention for her creative design. This statewide contest celebrates student creativity and a love of reading, and Sria’s work stood out among many impressive submissions from across Massachusetts.
Congratulations to Sria for this wonderful accomplishment! We are proud of you and the way our Finn students continue to shine both in and beyond the classroom.
Please take a moment to check out Sria’s bookmark design and some photos from Preschool's rendition of Nana in the City (great book to read to your children) included below.
